Open the chuck (part that holds the drill bit) by turning it counter clockwise. Once the jaws are open, insert the proper drill bit (see section wood&metal) of the correct size. Once the bit is in, tighten the chuck again by turning it clockwise. Once the chuck cannot be tightened further by hand, use the chuck key (hanging by a keycord to the right of the machine) to fully tighten it. This step is very essential as the bit can fly out if secured improperly. Tightening by hand is never enough! Make sure to remove the key after tightening the chuck. Having the drill spin up with it still inserted is very dangerous!
Clamping is another essential part when using any power tool. For drilling small workpieces, the small machine vice can be used. Clamp the piece between the jaws and secure the vice using the sliding nuts and bolts that are stored close to the vice. Ask a supervisor to help you if you donβt know how to properly secure the vice or if you canβt find the nuts and bolts that secure it. For larger workpieces, remove the vice and use a regular clamp to secure the workpiece.
To the right of the support beam, there is a handle that unlocks the table. Once unlocked it can be swiveled left to right. Additionally, the crank handle on the left can now be used to lower and raise the table. Use these to set a comfortable height for your workpiece (take about 1cm to the tip of the drill bit).
There is a hole in the bed of the drill press and between the jaws of the machine vice. Always check if the drill bit is aligned such that it will pass through these holes when lowered down. If not, the drill press and vice will get damaged, along with the drill bit that is being used. Once the proper alignment is found, lock the table back in place by retightening the handle to the right of the drill press.
Once everything is secure and locked in place, take proper safety precautions: wear eye protection, wear hearing protection, tie your hair back, check for any loose clothing items.
Adjust the visor to the appropriate height and close it. Check if the circular red button (emergency stop) is depressed. If so, turn it clockwise to release it. Now all safety switches are closed, allowing the machine to start.
Ensure the bit is not touching the material yet! Press the green button to spin up the spindle. Slowly plunge the bit into the workpiece by turning the handle on the top right of the machine. Lower the drill to the desired depth and slowly release the spindle back up.
Remember to take the drill bit back out and put it back where it belongs. Clean the workarea after use.
