General Architecture
There are two main types of FDM 3D printers, bed slingers and core XY printers. Their main difference is in the bed movement mechanism, as core XY printers allow for much faster and more precise printers, but are more complex to manufacture. The bamboo labs p1p is
The main structure of FDM 3D printers, both bed slingers and CoreXY, is similar in that they both have three main components:
- Frame: The frame is the main support structure of the printer. It is typically made of metal or plastic.
- X/Y/Z gantry system: The gantry system is responsible for moving the tool head around in the X, Y, and Z axes. It is typically made of metal or plastic rods and belts.
- Build plate: The build plate is the surface where the print is built. It is typically made of glass, metal, or plastic

- Extruder: The extruder is the part of the printer that feeds the filament to the tool head. It consists of the following subcomponents:
- Drive gear: The drive gear grips the filament and pushes it through the nozzle
- Heat block: The heat block melts the filament so that it can be extruded through the nozzle.
- Nozzle: The nozzle is the small opening at the end of the extruder where the molten filament is extruded.
- Tool head: The tool head is the part of the printer that moves around and deposits the filament. It consists of the following subcomponents:
- Extruder: The extruder is mounted on the tool head.
- Fan: The fan cools the nozzle and the extruded filament.
- Build plate: The build plate is the surface where the print is built. It is heated to help the filament adhere to it. It is typically made of glass, metal, or plastic.
- Electronics: The electronics control the printer's movements and temperature. It consists of the following subcomponents:
- Mainboard: The mainboard is the main circuit board in the printer. It controls all of the other electronic components.
- Power supply: The power supply provides power to the printer's electronic components.
- LCD screen: The LCD screen is used to control the printer and monitor the print.
- SD card reader: The SD card reader is used to read the print files from the SD card.
- End stops: The end stops are switches that detect when the tool head has reached the end of its travel.

This diagram shows the following parts of a Bamboo Labs 3D printer:
- Tool head: The tool head is the part of the printer that moves around and deposits the filament. It contains the nozzle, hot-end, and fan.
- SD card: The SD card is used to store the print files.
